If I get more airflow from the Triad tile,
what does it do to my static pressure in
the rest of my data center? 

Triad tiles take the air that is available and disperse it to the servers. That is how it can cool better with less air. The amount of air is similar to a 56% tile. When using CFD, you can use the information for a 56% tile as your baseline.
Secondly, depending on the heat load in the cabinets, many customers install half as many Triad tiles as they would with flat bottom tiles.
This enables the customer to improve static pressure and sometimes reduce the amount of CRAC supplied air.

 

What happens when the direction
of the air is not in line with the fin? 

The Triad tile is more like a wing than a scoop.

The curve of the fin, the angle of the fin and the hole-pattern work on creating pressure changes at the top of the tile. This change in pressure across the top of the tile is what creates dispersion, reduces mixing and creates a virtual curtain (stratification) at the top of the cold aisle.
Since the performance of the tile is based on pressure instead of scooping, the direction of the fin is not imperative for the tile to work. The dispersion is evident no matter what the direction of the air is under the floor. The only performance parameter impacted by the direction under the floor is stratification.

 

 

You say that it is not about CFM but every model is designed to measure CFM and you need CFM to cool the servers. 
How can you say it is not about CFM? 

We recognize the need for a certain amount of CFM for the servers to be cooled.  However, the CFM needs to be “usable”.  Uptime estimates that only 28% of the air coming out of flat bottom tiles actually goes to the server.  Also, when you measure CFM you do not measure the level of short cycling or the quality of stratification at the top of the cold aisle.  Triad tiles improve the amount of air to the server while improving thermal integrity through getting rid of the short cycle and by creating a stratification line at the top of the cold aisle.  By fixing these two issues you avoid mixing at the tile, at the top of the cold aisle and improve airflow to the server.

What do you mean when you call
the airflow system an “ecosystem”?

For years we have been measuring the amount of air coming out of the tile as the sole performance measurement but there is so much more to achieving an efficient cooling system in the data center.  Here is a list of problems found in the ecosystem:

  • Mixing at the tile and mixing at the top of the cold aisle
  • Entrainment (trapped air created by a stream of air) in cold aisle
  • Reverse flow from negative pressure caused from a stream flow
  • By-pass airflow because of the cabinet door
  • Return air temperature being too low (poor delta T)
  • Under floor obstructions and inconsistent under floor pressure
  • Low set points to compensate for poor airflow (high energy bills)

 

When measuring the efficiency of a tile or a raised floor cooling system, you need to address all of these issues simultaneously.
